Rethinking Consistency—Conventional and Unconventional Ways to Show Up as a Business Owner

There’s a lot of talk in the online space about showing up and being consistent.

And while we all know consistency matters actually being consistent? That’s where things get real.

Lately, inside my membership and even in DMs, I’ve been hearing the same thing again and again:

“I want to be consistent, but I keep falling off.”

If you’ve felt that too, I want you to know… I see you.

I’ve been there.

Some days, you’re energized and in flow. Other days, it feels like you’re moving through mud. And in the middle of all that, there’s this quiet pressure to keep showing up—to post, share, email, engage—no matter how you’re feeling.

But what if the real key isn’t in doing more… it’s in redefining what showing up actually looks like?

Let’s talk about that. 🖤

The Misunderstood Truth About Consistency

We’re often taught that consistency means constant visibility. Being online all the time. Showing up the same way, every day, no matter what.

But that’s not sustainable. And more importantly, it’s not the only way.

Consistency isn’t about perfection, it’s about rhythm.

It’s about commitment to your vision, in a way that honors your energy, your season, and your capacity.

When you begin to see it that way, something shifts. You stop trying to keep up, and you start tuning in.

Conventional Ways of Showing Up

Let’s start with what we usually think of when we hear “show up consistently.”

These are the structured, strategic ways:

✔ Regular posts on Instagram or LinkedIn
✔ Weekly or biweekly newsletters
✔ A podcast episode, blog, or video
✔ Showing up on Stories or Lives
✔ Engaging in DMs or comments

These are powerful. They build trust, position your brand, and keep you in the minds of your audience.

And they work. When done from a place of alignment, not pressure.

Example: One of my clients began sending out simple, story-based newsletters every other Friday, no fancy design, no major strategy. Just honest, helpful thoughts. Her open rates? Higher than ever. Her replies? More heartfelt and genuine.

There was a time I couldn’t bring myself to write an email to my list. Not because I didn’t want to but because I had built it up to be this big, perfect thing.

The shift came when I made it simple. Personal. Honest.

Now I have a rhythm that works: a soft content plan with space for spontaneity. I stay connected without forcing myself into someone else’s blueprint.

Structure is supportive. But joy is what keeps it alive.

Unconventional Ways of Showing Up (That Still Count)

This is where things get beautiful.

Because showing up doesn’t only happen in your content calendar. Sometimes, it looks quieter. Sometimes, it happens off the grid.

Here are a few ways I’ve seen (and lived) powerful, unconventional consistency:

💡 Sharing a moment from your day in Stories no filter, no fluff
💡 Repurposing a post from last year that still holds truth
💡 Spending time inside someone else’s community, adding value
💡 Voice-noting a past client to check in
💡 Journaling about what your audience needs to hear next
💡 Choosing to rest, fully, and letting that be part of your rhythm

Example: A coach I know took a week off Instagram and spent time engaging in a few Facebook groups she genuinely enjoyed. No pitch. No agenda. Just presence. That week? She got 2 client inquiries without ever posting.

None of these show up in the algorithm but they deepen your connection, sharpen your clarity, and build trust over time.

So yes, this counts too.

How to Make Consistency Feel More Like Flow (and Less Like Force)

Here’s what I’ve found helps most:

Define your own version of “showing up.” What does it look like for you to be present and engaged with your audience?

Use micro-consistency. One small act a day, replying to a message, resharing a post, checking in with your list builds momentum.

Create space to rest. Sustainability comes from spaciousness, not pressure.

Let go of the guilt. You don’t owe the algorithm your energy. You owe yourself a way of working that feels nourishing.

Have a go-to menu of options. Something you can lean on during low-energy days.

What if… showing up didn’t mean pushing through?

What if it meant staying connected to yourself, your message, and your people in a way that felt clear and easeful?

Some days you’ll write a post.
Some days you’ll rest.
Some days you’ll simply hold the vision.

And it all counts.
